Nick, the heartline driver / available for all things, recently said the following which I find true…

Rarely before have I been in a situation where the line between My Life and My Work has been so blurry.

This week we’re hosting a team of 30.  If I counted the number of hours I’m putting into my job it would be pretty much the same number of hours I’m awake.  On the other hand, it could be said I’m not working at all, just living.  - Nick

This team has been very inquisitive.  Many have done their homework on Haiti and asked me questions that I struggle with on a weekly basis.  Here we are day in and day out facing real issues of injustice straight in the face.  See video below for an interesting perspective.

Here is what’s up recently

We visited Andrama’s church.  If you remember, Andrama works at the Maternity Center and cooked with Melissa on the Run For Life.  Melissa & Andrama became good friends after that.  She invited us to her church.  For some reason, what stuck out to me was these older ladies standing up waving their arms with the music.  Maybe it’s because I hardly ever see older people (the mean average age in Haiti is 27 years.)  The place as a whole just seemed free to worship, dance and sing loudly.

The current team is helping us secure the bench seats at the Guest House from falling.

Car Repair

Nick and I worked on the Mits yesterday.  We have been finding auto parts places and little shops that have the pieces we need.  We attempted to get our starter rebuilt.  Looks like today, I will go back and go for attempt #2 :-) It doesn’t quite work we will try it again.

Lifetree Team

Here are some Lifetree team pictures.

- I gave some of them some first hand experience buying food on the side of the street.

- Melissa & the ladies cooked a huge feast!  The picture doesn’t even show half of it.

Police Ticket

Nick and I almost got a ticked.  One of our lights were out.  Pretty comical considering how many other cars have their lights out as well :-D

Police offered us a $50 bribe option or a ticket for the brake light being out.  We stood around not willing to pay the bribe figuring they would give us the ticket.  After some time staring at each other the police said we could take off!  No bribe & no ticked!

Bakery Update

It has been a while since my last post about the bakery.  It’s been hard to post about because it’s been such a  p-r-o-c-e-s-s,  but what isn’t, right :-D .

Recently I had someone asking me about the bakery.  I am super excited to go eat my first piece of bread *hopefully soon*!  What will be even more exciting is seeing these young men forging and consuming the bread of life.

IMG_20130304_095547.jpgIMG_20130304_095555.jpgIMG_20130304_095603.jpgIMG_20130304_095658.jpgIMG_20130304_095713.jpgIMG_20130304_095725.jpg

John recently wrote, “The oven is in its new home, a custom built concrete enclosure, right next to the bakery.  Our 20 quart mixer [HAS] arrived! Soon we will begin the process of recipe development, and tying down loose ends on our exact processes as far as baking and management go. We have 12 guys selected for the program, and will most likely open our doors (or windows rather), in early May!”

Moise, pictured at the top of the blog post looking out the bakery window, is such an outstanding guy.  He is defying the negative norms and stands on a solid foundation.  He comes to work humbly and ready to do anything.

Josh is the genius chef of all things food!  I have enjoyed his friendship and frankness.  Pretty refreshing :-D .  It has been so awesome to hear his ideas and thoughts for the bakery and eventually for the restaurant!  I know, just surprised you with the restaurant thing in there.  Umm… Heartline Ministries has a cooking school… so it almost makes sense to start a  rest-au-ra-thing… but, alas, that is for another time in the future.

My very very tiny role in all of this… and to which I look forward to doing … is working with Josh in the coming days on the technology aspect of the bakery and restaurant.  Especially since it is always fun and challenging living in this Haiti world of power maybe’s, internet sort-of’s, and other chutes and ladders.

Men’s Bakery

The men’s bakery is taking shape!  This is a prefab building that was donated by a company in the Netherlands.  They are working to possibly do more construction of this kind in Haiti so shipped over two demo houses.  Maxima was kind enough to donate the one to Heartline.

Eventually, this building will be filled with bakery equipment.  As of now, we are still working on the electrical.  They will make a hole in the concrete outer wall which will create a window to sell bread out of to the community!  A group of guys will work and run the bakery.

Please continue to pray for this part of the ministry as it is still taking shape and a lot more steps need to be finished before it is running.

Women carrying lots of bags in Haiti

Always Amazing What They Can Carry

A number of things have been happening around Heartline and with us:

Men’s Bakery

The cement pad has been poured and we are getting ready for the shop to be built.  I will try to get a picture of this the next time I am out at the property.

Only in Haiti

Haiti is a great place.  You just have to smile at certain things.  I now have a collection of pictures!  It’s great!  Here is one to add to the list.  Same exact can of mushrooms but different price!

Same can with different prices in Haiti

Donations

I have been working on making it easier to donate through heartline’s website.  It has been troublesome for people and we wanted to make it less complicated.  The current hosting service we are using doesn’t allow me to do configure the site to take credit card transactions.  This means we will have to move it elsewhere.  Looking at DreamHost as they offer a free service for non-profits.

Cooking School

Melissa Teaching at the Heartline Ministries - Haiti - Cooking School They had a two day seminar at the cooking school.  Melissa taught on Friday how to make stuffed green peppers!  All ingredients haitians can buy around here!  It was funny, the cooking ladies had never heard of such a thing!  They were asking John if this recipe was for real :-D

Bible

A girl came through the guest house who had an amazing spirit, hungry for hearing the word.  She had a King James Bible, which is great, but she was having a heard time understanding it.  Melissa spent a lot of time talking with her while she was here.  Melissa wanted to give her a more contemporary version of the Bible that would be easier for her to understand.  So we ordered her a bible and also sent her Letters from a Skeptic.  We continue to pray for her as she grows up to be a young adult.  It is exciting to see her passion for the good news!
