Lifetree Group Helping Heartline

Playing games in the evening with the Lifetree group in Haiti We have a group working with Heartline!  We are grateful for this group!  They have done a fantastic job!  It has been fun getting to know them.  They have come with different ages and different abilities.  There are some older and then some from a youth group.  The team was split up between the different facilities.

  • OK Corral - Most people have been at the new Heartline property.  There is soooo much to be done out there.  Our big project is to make a space for the Men’s bakery.  Secretly it will be a men’s discipleship training.  Ok, maybe not so secret :-) .  We are preparing the area for the bakery to be built. The team is also painting, cleaning out wagon area, paint gate, and repairs at the school.
  • Maternity Center – The women in this group went and held babies, help sort pills, took blood pressure of the women coming for check-up.
  • Women’s Center – Clean branches out of yard, sand – paint – varnish tables, paint roof with roof paint.
  • Harbor House – Dig trench for to run water pipe. They helped paint a much needed area as well.
  • Guest House - We have so many things on our TODO list we just couldn’t get done.
    • The generator case was about to fall apart.  I was always afraid it was going to break while I was filling it up to slam on my head!  Now, it should be fixed!
    • Painting!  So much of this house needs to be painted.  With so many people coming in and out the walls have gotten worn.  It’s really everything from suitcases banging into them – to – the paint tearing off the walls from moisture.

Here are some pics from the guest house help!

4 Highlights – Movie, Cooking Test, UN Signs & more…

There have been a lot of random things happening recently.

We have been preparing for a team that will be working specifically with Heartline.  We have lot’s of projects for them to do!  The team will be made up of people of all different ages.  They will mostly be working out at the new property but they will be doing a few projects at the guest house (which we are excited about :-D ).

Over the last week we had a few highlights (besides the other posts):

Heartline Haiti Cooking School

1. Melissa and I judged at the cooking school.  The food they made was amazing!  I was full by the time we left!  My favorite was this perfectly done fish with some very tasty sauce. A lot of the students were really really nervous.  At one point, one of the students put all the glasses in front of me when she was suppose to give them out to each person at the table – It was funny :-)

IMG_20120312_191943.jpg2. Monday Movie Madness!  We invited a number of the people from around the community over to the guest house to watch Courageous!  Great movie which is meant to inspire men to be the leaders we are called to be.  We will be showing this movie again with the Heartline team coming through next week.

IMG_20120318_190924.jpg3. A family staying with us this week had a birthday and Melissa pulled out some brownie’s (thanks Beth Crave for donating the mix!) to celebrate his birthday!  It was a surprise and it tasted delicious!  We don’t usually get desert around here.

4. Remember the sign that said the UN will molest and put you in jail.  Today someone has spray painted all the signs attempting to erase them :-D  I just can’t figure out if it was a translation error or a joke… well, at least something is being done about it now :-)

IMG_20120318_195405.jpgIt is always an honor to see groups of people meet at the guest house.  I traditionally rationalize in my mind that it is coincidence or some sort of stroke of luck that people end up connecting with others while visiting the guest house.  My logical mind has a hard time comprehending that other forces are at work.

It’s been too many times and to many coincidences.  To many people come at the perfect time to connect with the perfect people.  Should I be surprised?  We pray for this everyday!

Coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous. -Albert Einstein

Tonight we had two people on different trips:

Group A – Bill & Jen:

  • Bill & Jen have been trying to adopt for 4/5 years.  Ouch!
  • They have lived in Haiti for 9 years out in a small village.
  • Grew up in Kansas City – Missouri suburb.

Group B:

  • Have adopted from Haiti.
  • Have been involved in Haiti for the last 12 years with orphanages.
  • Grew up in the same Kansas City – Missouri suburb as Bill & Jen.

Similarities:

  • Went to the same high school.
  • Worked at the same McDonalds at the same time.
  • Knew the same people.
  • Met in Haiti tonight at the Guest House :-)

I wanted to start writing about these meetings because this isn’t the first time.  It’s not the second, third or fourth!  It feels like it’s been happening as often as we see the pigs outside on the road!  (Which is every morning ;-) )

Haiti adoptions are not always easy.  In fact, the are usually downright confusing and difficult.  The process is not always the same and may or may not change based on your situation.

Besides growing up in the same area - The connection and experience of this other group tonight will help Bill & Jen as they work through issues in their process that others have worked through.

It is a privilege and honor to see these “coincidences”.

Coincidence is the word we use when we can’t see the levers and pulleys. -Emma Bull

Recently we had a group at the guesthouse who was fleeing from a city several hours away. At 3:00 in the morning, they were awakened to several armed robbers trying to enter their house. Thankfully there was a backdoor, so the group ran – barefoot – into the woods behind the house. Pitch black everywhere.

The robbers chased them, guns out and ready to fire. The group ran as fast as they could, weaving in and out of trees, behind broken down walls, until they finally found a place where they could hide. Unfortunately, one of the people in their group who was bringing up the rear fell onto the ground. The robber chasing him was too close behind for him to get back up or hide. So all he could do was sit as quiet as possible, hoping not to be seen. What happened next was I’m sure a miracle. The robber stopped within five feet of him and was shining his flashlight everywhere – but NEVER EVEN SAW HIM! Wow, that makes me think of the prayer, “God, make blind eyes see and SEEING EYES BLIND.”

Thankfully the robbers eventually went back to the house, stealing only a few things. Everyone was okay – minus a missing toenail, fingernail, and lots of scrapes and bruises. The group packed up and drove to our guesthouse the next day.

Here’s the other amazing thing. We have seen time and time again how perfectly God matches up who we have staying at the guesthouse at the same time. Well, that day along with this group, we had a group of five big, strong, tattooed men here. They were all EX-CRIMINALS, DRUG-DEALERS, PEOPLE WHO HAD SPENT TIME IN JAIL. Now they had each given their lives up to Christ, and are totally changed people. They have started a church, and they go around the country speaking about God’s love and how He transformed them.

Before we knew this group would be fleeing to our guesthouse, we had planned a night of worship and singing and prayer. So all the guests joined in. And guess who prayed and prayed for this group who had been robbed? THE EX-CRIMINALS, DRUG-DEALERS, PEOPLE WHO HAD SPENT TIME IN JAIL. They prayed for each of the group members, AND the thieves – to be transformed and give their lives to Christ. ANOTHER AMAZING THING THAT COULD HAVE ONLY BEEN PLANNED BY GOD!

Ryan and I are blessed to be a part of what God is doing through the guesthouse. Please pray for this group as they recover emotionally and physically, and for the thieves to be changed people – as we know is possible through Christ.

ECC Visit in Review

IMG_20120304_150418.jpg Had a great time with the ECC team which included Brian, Tim, Mary, and Chris.  We all did quite a bit while they were here.

We enjoyed having the team friends!  They were encouraging and such an honor to be around.  It’s often hard to find the words to describe what it is like living in Haiti so when we have visitors come it is an honor to share with them about this place.

I could write so SO much about the last few days but here is a quick glimpse.

In a nutshell:

  • Visited Heartline  (Maternity Center, Women’s Center – literacy, sewing, cooking, Teen mom house)
  • Did some work out at the OK Corral (the new property Heartline purchased)
  • Picked up missing luggage at the airport
  • Picked up Mary who ended up a day late b/c of weather in Minneapolis
  • Flew into Fond-de-blancs on an MAF single engine plane
  • Visited Haiti Christian Development Fund
  • Story! Drove back about a 5 hour journey.  Tim realized he forgot his phone in the car.  Tim ran out the gate.  I jumped on my motorcycle.  Picked up Tim on the moto.  Drove crazy -in crazy- traffic looking for the driver.  Meanwhile someone found a phone # and was able to get in touch with the driver.  Needless to say – that was an exciting motorcycle ride :-D
  • Went to the hospital to sing, pray and visit over the sick and dying.
  • Went to Port Au Prince Fellowship church
  • Yikes! We hosted a group of people that were robbed in a distant city in Haiti.  They came to the GH for refuge for the night and off to the Embassy this morning.
  • Had a night of worship back at the house – which was so amazing b/c God was present.  Chris shared a little devo with us which was a blessing.

We pray for safe travels back to the U.S. today.

We are having a great time with the Emmanuel Covenant Church team down visiting and doing some work.  ECC is our home church and have enjoyed hosting them down here in Haiti.  They have come for a number of reasons but in a nutshell they are doing an exploratory visit to check out what ministries could possibly be a good fit for them to partner with long term.  They are checking out Heartline, Covenant World Relief projects and any other places that come up.  Of course, I am biased towards Heartline :-)

IMG_20120229_104934.jpgIMG_20120229_131150.jpg

We are out at the new property working on the Tilapia project.  Just a small thing but we made screen’s that will go over the buckets of maggots.  It was a sloooowwww start but we geared it up at the end :-)

IMG_20120301_135240.jpgIMG_20120301_140408.jpg

John took time out of his busy day to take the team to Corail (or called Jerusalem).  Heartline built some houses out there.  We had a chance to visit with a few of the families.  The last time I was out there was during the living water well ceremony.  It was really fun to be able to see the people in the homes and the area develop!

Tomorrow…

Brian Heyer, such a great man, offered up his seat on the plane so that I could go with the team to Fond De Blanc.  It is such an honor to be able to go on this trip to a different part of Haiti.  We leave tomorrow for a one day quick trip.

3 Humorous Sightings in Haiti

1. Painted around the UN base walls

UN Sign by the Haiti Port Au Prince Airport

Sign Reads – “No trespassing risk to be molested and put in jail”

Not sure what happened but I am pretty sure they didn’t mean molested – something is lost in translation :-)  This sign appears by the UN base near the Port Au Prince airport.

2. Sitting in the airport

Yes, this man is using a cell phone and attached is a telephone headset :-)  Guess we all like to keep with the things we are used to :-)

3. Guest House gift shop

Yes all the T-Shirts are the same price :-)  This sign was in our gift shop for the longest time and we finally replaced it.
